We are proud partners of the ASPCA Right Horse program. This program was designed by the ASPCA to unite equine welfare professionals and organizations to maximize the number of horses adopted throughout the United States each year. Before we were able become a partner, we worked closely with ASPCA leaders to refine our procedures to ensure they align with standards and best practices. We continue to learn by being involved in this program each and every day and are grateful to be a part of it!

How to Adopt

Please note that appointments are strongly encouraged to ensure that you get to meet the furry friend you have your eye on and to ensure minimal wait times.

Our Adoption Process:

Potential adopters may come in anytime during open hours and visit with our available animals.
Meet with one of our adoption counselors so that we can get to know you and find an animal that best suits your needs and lifestyle.
If you are applying to adopt a dog and you currently have other dogs, we may request a meet and greet at the shelter (your dog must be current on rabies).
Once an animal is selected and we feel that it is a good fit for your home, you typically will be able to take the animal home that day (unless there is a special circumstance that requires the animal to stay at the shelter longer).
Review and sign our adoption agreement.
Receive your new pet’s medical history, rabies certificate and microchip information.
Animals must be spayed or neutered prior to being adopted. If your pet is not old enough, you will be able to take them home and sign a foster-to-adopt agreement. Once your pet is altered, we will complete the proper paperwork and finalize the adoption.
We reserve the right to refuse any adoption for any reason.

Why Conversational Adoption Counseling?

In-person, face-to-face adoptions help us get to know each adopter on a personal level. Everyone that walks into our shelter is an individual with a specific lifestyle, not just a name written on an application. People are more likely to be forthcoming when speaking in person, and these conversations help us make better matches.
It speeds up the adoption process, which decreases an animal’s time spent in the shelter. This helps prevent disease, behavior decline and creates more open space in the shelter. More space means more animals that we can help!
It allows us to get the information we need to make adoption decisions in a way that minimizes adopter stress and makes the adoption process more enjoyable.
Conversation-based adoptions help us build relationships with adopters so that they see us as a lifelong resource for their pets and return for advice and support when concerns crop up.
By trusting adopters and providing them with the support and information they need without judgment, we are able to place more animals in good homes and save more lives.

Pricing

Puppies & Dogs

Puppy under 6 months old – $350

Fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, rabies/distemper/bordetella vaccinations, heartworm testing, fecal testing, deworming, flea treatment, and basic grooming

Dog over 6 months old – $250

Spay/neuter, microchip, rabies/distemper/bordetella vaccinations, heartworm testing, fecal testing, deworming, flea treatment, and basic grooming

Adult dogs 30 pounds and under – $300

Spay/neuter, microchip, rabies/distemper/bordetella vaccinations, heartworm testing, fecal testing, deworming, flea treatment, and basic grooming

Kittens & Cats

Kitten under 6 months old – $200

Spay/neuter, microchip, rabies/distemper vaccination (age appropriate), FeLV/FIV testing, deworming, flea treatment, and basic grooming

Cat over 6 months old – $150

Spay/neuter, microchip, rabies/distemper vaccination, FeLV/FIV testing, deworming, flea treatment, and basic grooming

Other Fees

Rabbits, guinea pigs & hamsters – $30

Spay/neuter deposit – $250

Refundable after animal is altered

Transport fee – $100

Applies to animals acquired via SQSPCA transport

Hold fee – $60/night, max of 7 nights

Pre-weight hold – $20 kittens, $50 puppies

Applies to kittens and puppies who are not big enough for sterilization surgery.

Cost to Our Non-Profit Shelter:

The cost to care and prepare animals for adoption is much greater than the fees we charge. If at any time adopters are able to consider a donation in addition to the adoption fee, we are extremely grateful. Donations can be made online at www.sqspca.org or with our donation form or at the shelter.
