The Susquehanna SPCA is proud to offer low-cost veterinary services for pets in our community through our Pet Wellness and Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic Programs. Both programs have income-based qualifications.

To qualify, participants are asked to show proof of state benefits including programs like Medicaid, HEAP, SNAP, and others. If you have questions regarding eligibility requirements, please give us a call at 607-547-8111 to learn more.

Kitchie's Pet Wellness Clinic

At the SQSPCA, we know how important it is to pet owners to keep their pets happy and healthy. Kitchie’s Pet Wellness Clinic is designed to help you do just that through preventative medicine. This low-cost program is for those who have fallen on hard times or need financial assistance to care for their pet. You will be asked to prove qualification status to be considered for these services.

Services Offered During Clinics:

Wellness Exams: Physical exam by our veterinarian to determine the overall health of your pet
Preventative Care: Flea/Tick preventatives, & more
Vaccinations: Rabies vaccines (free through partnership with Otsego County Department of Health), distemper vaccines
& More

For pets to qualify for the SQSPCA Pet Wellness Program, they should be free of any major illnesses. The purpose of this clinic is preventative medicine, though we may be able to assist with minor ailments. Patients with chronic illnesses that require ongoing medical care will be referred to their primary veterinarian for treatment.

Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic

At the SQSPCA, one of our core values includes ensuring that every pet is altered. Through our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, we are expanding access to these services by creating affordable access to them. This program is designed to help those who have fallen on hard times or otherwise need assistance caring for their pets. You will be asked to prove qualification status to be considered for these services.

Qualifying pets must be:

Healthy
5 years of age and under
Under 70 pounds
Able to be safely handled by our staff

***Cat fees temporarily subsidized by ASPCA grant for income qualifying participants (updated pricing below).

Animal Control Info

If you find a stray dog, please contact the Dog Control Officer (DCO) of the town where you found it. This is the best way to ensure the dog’s safety and reunite it with its family.

Licensing Info

According to NYS Agriculture and Markets Law, Article 7, all dogs must be kept up to date on their rabies vaccine and licensed in the municipality they live in.

Wondering how to get a license? First you need to have proof that your dog is up to date on their rabies vaccine (if they aren’t, you can get them vaccinated during one of our free clinics or through your veterinarian), then you can visit town/city clerk to obtain a license.

Each of the 22 municipalities we contract with has either a 3 or 5 day hold period. If an owner reaches out to reclaim their pet during that timeframe, by law, they must have an up to date rabies vaccine and license for their dog in order for us to release it. In addition, there are fees the state mandates and fees for the shelter service.

Dogs get out and get loose, life happens. Please make sure your dog is up to date and licensed – we want to reunite you with your family member ASAP and don’t want to hold them here any longer than we are required to by law. To ensure you can just swing by to pick your dog up and take them back home the same day with minimal fees, it is your responsibility to do this.

DocuPet: Keep Your Pets Safe

The SQSPCA has partnered with DocuPet to bring the National Pet Registry to our community.

Registering your pet with DocuPet takes just minutes! It is completely free, and includes an ID tag, plus our HomeSafe® service at no cost. All of your pet’s most important information, such as contact information, microchip number, photos, plus more, is safely stored in one user-friendly platform. Keeping your pet’s tag on, and profile up to date helps ensure they’ll be reunited with you quickly, if they ever go missing.

Surrendering a Pet

If you would like to bring your dog or cat to the Susquehanna SPCA to be rehomed, please first call (607) 547-8111. We need to discuss your situation and set up an appointment to determine if relinquishment is the best option.

At your appointment, you will be asked to sign an owner release form and our staff will ask you questions to get to know the pet you are rehoming. Having this information allows us to find your pet the best home that suits their personality and needs. To streamline the process, we ask that you please bring medical records and any other information you have on your pet.

Anyone who wishes to relinquish an animal to the shelter must have an appointment.

Animals we cannot take or are not eligible for adoption:

Another option available for those who need to find a new home for their pet is posting them on the website Rehome. This will allow you to care for your animal in your home while you find them other placement versus surrendering them into our care. In this case, you would receive applications from interested parties through the Rehome website and would introduce them to your pet on your own.

Report Animal Cruelty

If you suspect and/or witness animal cruelty in your community, you can:

Most of the reports we receive involve lack of food, water, shelter, and general animal care. Cases can result in on-site investigations, animal seizure, and/or prosecuting offenders.

If you would like to remain anonymous to those suspected of animal cruelty, we can arrange that. However, in order for the report to be taken seriously, we do need your name and contact information to share with law enforcement.

Lost and Found Pets

Click the button below to be taken to our Lost and Found Pets of Otsego County, NY group on Facebook. With over 8,000 members, this group has been very successful at reuniting lost pets and their owners in the past. Anyone in/around Otsego County, NY is welcome to post photos of their lost pet in this group along with details of where they are missing from. Any found pets brought into the SQSPCA will be posted by our staff there as well.

Pet Food Pantry

Sparky’s Pet Food Pantry is located in our Admissions Lobby and is available to the public any time Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The pantry is stocked with any surplus pet-related supplies (food, litter, toys, etc.) that are donated to the animals in our care. Sparky’s Pet Food Pantry is here for folks in our community who are experiencing difficulties. It is important to us to help if we can because we want to keep animals with their families where they are happy and comfortable.

Here to Help Hotline

What is it?

The Here to Help Hotline is a service of the Susquehanna SPCA designed to provide assistance to folks with farm animals. It is a proactive initiative designed to prevent hardship from turning into cruelty. Anyone who is in need of supplies or assistance in rehoming their animals can call the hotline and we will do our best to help.

How do I get help?

If you are in need of help with care or rehoming your animals we encourage you to call (607)547-8111. All calls will be kept confidential and judgement free – we are here to help you to the best of our abilities.

We are always excited to add folks to our network of Farm Friends to alert when we find farm animals in need. Being a member of the network doesn’t mean that you are on the hook to help every time we have a case. It just keeps you in the know so that if you can help, you have the opportunity to.
